Table for Two with a Seat for You! Day 20 of #jan30in30 - SOLD!

8"x6" oil on linen mounted on archival panel

She's waiting for you, come on! Could be your friend, or more? A nice seat in the shade on a sunny day, what else is blooming besides the flowers?

Art has the ability to transport us, jump-start our imaginations, bring those emotions bubbling to the surface...I know I'm always glad it's a big part of my life.
So yes, I am behind in the 30in30. Two paintings I've completed are related to a commission that is a birthday gift & can't yet be revealed...so I'm actually up to day 18. So...It's possible that I'll catch up.

Feeling pretty lucky though, I've definitely had my guardian angels following me, earning their wings. Sunday morning I was in the middle of (and survived) a 22 (yes, that's twenty-two) car pile-up here in New London, on the way to choir before church. It could have been worse. Black ice is the worst nightmare. This Florida girl is officially homesick for warm weather where ice is in your tea and not your highway!!

Sol Duo (Cafe Scene)

8"x10" oil on Belgian linen mounted on archival panel

Sunshine, excitement, peach lemonade

An umbrella of welcomed shade over a table of two.

I actually painted several different couples seated at this table. Luckily, when I started around one in the afternoon, I made a quick value sketch first. Then laid in the darks first thing- ALL the shadow places. Squinting down helps really reduce the values to a minimum. Even the sun and shadow on simple plastic cafe chairs becomes really fascinating. By getting the BIG shapes down quickly, the rest of the painting fall into place.  So with those basics down on canvas, you have the "basic truths" that you need to proceed.

Some of the staff at Cafe Sol, kept me hydrated with some fantastic peach lemonade (delicious!). They also kept a lot of folks happy with snow-cones! Thank you all!
For a second painting in the late afternoon/early evening, my friend Joanne showed up with this fantastic hat & green sun-dress...super for painting a "Hensche-esque mud-head" type quick figure sketch in the sun. Her hubby and daughter came along too, so it was great fun to catch up with the three of them. Thank you to Constancia for this last photo of me painting her mom!

Summer sun, shade under a big umbrella, dining 'al fresco'

Mango lemonade, iced mocha, what'll you have?

This is where I'll be painting on Friday, July 6th, late afternoon, Cafe Sol on Main Street in Niantic, CT. Today I just wanted to try a little 'something/study' from notes and memory. Who knows what I'll find tomorrow - there will be a band, and it's looking like quite a crowd will be out and about for Opsail2012CT! So much happening at McCooks Beach with 24 ships arriving out in the Bay!! Am I excited?? You betcha!!
