Provencal Pears and Orchids

24"x18"x1" deep, oil on gallery wrapped canvas

Life is short,
Break the RULES -
FORGIVE quickly,
KISS slowly, LOVE truly,
LAUGH uncontrollably,
and NEVER REGRET anything that made you smile.

I'm so in love with this orchid plant...I painted this one the night before I flew down to my mom's in Florida last week.  I went to stay with her during surgery, and give her "moral support" for a few days.

Who knew that this one single white orchid could bring me so much delight during a cold snowy winter in Connecticut? And pulling out the table cloth from Provence brings out the warmth of "far-away" places, allowing me to dream and plan....not only how I want to spend summer, but what I want to bring into my life....for the duration of the journey.

Color, joy, beauty, great memories, and anticipation of greater things to come.

Peonies in the Sunshine! - Mentoring Mondays

12"x12" oil on archival panel
Click here for more information, or to purchase.

Got to share another bouquet with a fellow artist on "Mentoring Monday", a class I teach at my home/studio/gardens. Here we dragged the table out into the sun, while we stood under the cool shade to paint. (Love this garden my hubby & I designed, all that hard work is paying off in fun painting time!). "Peonies in the Sunshine". New diagnosis: POCD....peony obsessive compulsive disorder.

Rhythm & Blues Peonies

7"x5" oil on archival panel
For more information, or to purchase, click here.

This one was a little study of shapes, and yes, I did do it after the  large one on the prior post.  Just testing out some fun little ideas. These small panels and canvases are great for that- trying out new ideas before going on to bigger things. I think the little ones pack just as much punch as the big ones. (Sigh), I just can't get enough of these peonies!

Roses By North Light (in Old Lyme)

12"x12" oil on board

Summer is so wonderful.

I can feel the exuberance blossom in me with every flower that blossoms in my yard!

Whether I paint outside in the garden, or cut the flowers and arrange a still-life to paint, the colors bring such a wonderful feeling!

This painting, along with 2 other coastal landscape scenes of mine are in the "Summer Painting and Sculpture Exhibit" at Lyme Art Association in Old Lyme, CT (on 90 Lyme Street).  The opening is this evening 6-8pm- and they'll be on view through July 29th. Please come have a look!

Peonies And Pears

30"x36" oil on stretched canvas

I'll be re-photographing this one under better light tomorrow, or as soon as the rain stops! The color isn't quite true on this shot.  For more information about this painting, visit this link or- contact me here.

It's been interesting watching things in my garden this year. First every thing is about two weeks early, that's okay by me. I anxiously await these white peonies each year as they have the most wonderful fragrance! If I could bottle it, I would bathe in it!

Well, just last Wednessday, they were all open and standing up straight and tall as I painted this scene on a gray cloudy day:
yep, that's them to the left of the bench, right where you can sit and bask in the fragrance!  The very next day, they were plopped over on the ground, their heads so heavy, they just couldn't hold them up any longer!

So....I cut them while they still looked good and fresh, and put them in large jugs and vases! Initially they were holding up really well, but I couldn't start this painting until Saturday evening.  Continued it on Sunday, and finally finished this afternoon, just in the nick of time!  The blossoms are dropping their petals, in big plops of petals whole blossoms at a time! It's hard to believe they go by in such a short time.

Varying Stages Of Undress; Pears

8"x10" oil on gallery wrapped stretched canvas

I have always admired paintings of those 'fancy pears' that come wrapped in elegant paper- like the ones in those fruit gifts that come at Christmas! As luck would have it our mother in law sent us a gorgeous box of pears (& other goodies). I ate one already, but realized I have these beautiful subjects to paint....and quickly as they'll need to be eaten! Pears have such a beautiful sensual form...and these three in varying stages of un-wrap are well- very fascinating to me.

Roses By North Light

12"x12" oil on deep cradled birch wood panel (sides painted, not necessary to frame, but of course you may if you prefer).

Flowers seem intended for the solace of ordinary humanity. ~John Ruskin

I've learned to not always listen to the weatherman. They predicted it would rain all morning and begin to clear in the afternoon. I awoke to find it perfectly sunny and clear this morning, but I had cut these roses the night before. Of course I was determined to paint them. I had re-arranged a bit of furniture in the studio (which I have pretty much abandoned all summer and painted out-side) so I could have just the right natural light fall on them from my north-facing windows (which allows nice even light in all day). Then by afternoon, there came the pouring rains! Glad I didn't listen to that turned around forecast!

Last of the Lilacs

5"x7" oil on gessoed masonite artboard

"Be in awe of all that is alive. Be in natural wonder. It is the pace of peace."- Gunilla Norris

While it poured rain outside this morning, I decided to work inside from a photo & memories of the lilacs that grew at my previous home. The old shrubs were packed with blooms the last summer I lived there, and made for some great painting & photography...and some great memories of fragrance and beauty - yes - even those memories leave great visual impressions!
