Oh, the flowers of summer are but a memory at this point in the year. Here in New England, the leaves have been swirling - letting go from the trees and dancing their last hurrah! This morning I opened the window blinds and thought I saw big fat snow flurries, much to my relief it was actually those twirly little seed-pod-leaflet thingies off of the maple trees. Thank goodness. 

I've got lots to share with you, so I'm putting it all in a newsletter tonight. I've been finishing up a humongous commission. If you missed seeing my post on Facebook, here's a preview of how big this one is. I'm laying in the underpainting here.

If you've followed my work for a long time, you know I'm a garden painter. From early spring to late fall I'm out there (with my hubby, the main garden guru) planting for painting! Every surface in my garden is a topic that I've painted.   Hydrangeas are such wonderful blossoms - and when they are in bloom, who could not feel they were in heaven?

For those of you not familiar with the acronym ACEO, it stands for Art Cards Editions and Originals.  The miniature paintings are the size of a baseball trading card, 2 1/2 inches by 3 1/2 inches.  This category of art has become increasingly popular on eBay the last couple of years.  These can be displayed on their own, or with a tiny little easel (like the kind you can find in Michaels Arts & Crafts type stores) on a display shelf, or these beautiful gems can be elegantly matted and framed with perhaps a mat of 4 inches wide.  ACEOs also make wonderful gifts!

A really nice one from 'the vault' that I had almost forgotten about! We planted this variety of Italian Sunflowers in our garden in previous years. I think I do miss them! They are a smaller flower head, and a creamy - buttery - pale yellow that goes really nicely with the hydrangeas we grow. Hmmm...already thinking about what I'd like to grow next summer!!  Cut flowers are so wonderful to bring into the studio to paint!

We trade a few small luxuries all the time, food for song....

water for brilliant flashes of color.

whew, the list is endless or so it seems. They are all in bloom right now in my front garden!

Hydrangea

I spent this morning under a shady archway, where this side of the house is in shade during the morning. Our yard is planted with many hydrangeas, but this one has turned out to be the biggest. The blossoms are in various shades of deep purply blue, some of them leaning more towards magenta, and some of them a bit paler blue. There's some plantings of lamb's ear near the base of this huge shrub, which is a nice accent along our garden path.

Being able to stand and really see your subject for a couple hours, really gives you an appreciation of the tonal qualities you are looking at. The warms and the cools in the foliage, as well as the blossoms; with some areas grayed down from being in deep shade. I can't think of many better ways to spend a morning!

Italian Sunflowers North Light Gray Day

It was gray and overcast today, which makes for a nice cool silvery light in my studio. I'm still thinking about Hensche's teachings from Camille Przewodek's workshop. Cool light, warm shadows...there's a lot of wonderful color in shadows on gray days.

In the meantime, I have a commission painting started (hints....wedding, Ireland, hmm, what could be more romantic??) I head out tomorrow to go 'fetch my mom' and bring her up here to visit....so it looks like my posting will be a bit dicey for the next several days...unless I find a Panera....and a good bit of free time. I think I might have some 'chores' with mom before we head back up here. Hubby will hold down the fort up here & keep the flowers growing.
